Michael Davis

Michael Davis, a native of Rhode Island, graduated from the Art Institute of Boston in 1967, majoring in illustration. Following a three year stint in the U.S. Army, he established himself as a jewelry designer in the Providence area. Finding the confines of such employment didn't leave him adequate time to paint, he left it to devote all his efforts to his first love, painting.

Davis' use of clear, direct and clean color, coupled with the use of vigorous brush strokes are reminiscent of Cezanne's works, although the artist says he was most influenced by Hopper, Monet and Sargeant. His clean areas of color play off one another giving his paintings an unusual vibrancy. The clarity of light available at the tip of Cape Cod, a favorite locale of Davis', lends itself to his dynamic style resulting in fresh and exciting works.
