The subjects of Peter's paintings are inspired by the things, people, places, and memories of a quintessential New England childhood. Having spent many summers on Cape Cod, inspiration is often found during walks on the beach, and in the weathered, rustic architecture found near the ocean. Having lived in rural areas as well, Peter is equally drawn to fields, stone walls, pastures, and the rustic architecture of rural interior New England. His paintings have often portrayed the unpeopled landscape. Recently, he has begun including figures alongside a somewhat abstract treatment to the landscape. In all his paintings, he focuses on light, and how it interacts and defines the subject.
Having trained in studio art under Massachusetts artists Jack Coughlin, Lionel Gongora, Hanlon Davies, and William Patterson at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Peter has developed a style greatly influenced by the works of Winslow Homer, Andrew and James Wyeth, Edward Hopper, as well as more contemporary artists Bo Bartlett, David Hockney, and Robert Cardinal.
Born in Beverly, on Boston's North Shore, he has lived on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and in New Hampshire, Vermont and western Massachusetts. He currently lives in New Hampshire with his wife and two children.
